KAUTTER & KELLEY ARCHITECTS is a very skilled, highly qualified architectural design firm with diverse project experience. Established in 1994, the award winning studio designs and oversees construction on a wide range of building types demanding advanced knowledge in building technologies and design specialization. Our portfolio of professional experience is defined by a history of creating spaces to live, work, learn, worship, and entertain.

We build client relationships one at a time; consequently, our approach to new projects tends to be patient and engaging. We believe the thoughtful execution of well-designed building projects can be a catalyst for positive social change. We also believe being in regular contact with beautiful environments changes us.

Architecture should celebrate human existence. As architects, we are engaged in a constant effort to define our notions of utopia and transform the built environments in which we interact every day. Architects and planners are the lead custodians of our natural resources because of the ways in which buildings impact the global environment. Our designs for urban planning and architecture are “green” and sustainable.

K&KA provides cohesive design solutions expressing rational and timeless aesthetic qualities. Our firm helps people plan, design, and construct quality environments for living and working, whether that involves short term problem solving or strategies for long-term investment.

Recently Added Work

KAUTTER & KELLEY ARCHITECTS, a full service small private practice, is committed to delivering responsive architectural services. The firm is represented by a diverse portfolio with extensive experience in design for new construction, renovation, restoration, and interiors.

Incorporated in 1994, the architectural practice is managed by its principals, Michael Kautter, AIA, President; Steven Kelley, AIA, Vice President; and Amy Laughlin, Secretary/Treasurer. Both principal architects began their professional experience in 1981 in major urban markets; New York City and Columbus, Ohio. Due to their depth of experience, the firm is often called upon to provide many varied professional architectural services for which it is uniquely qualified.

Approximately one-third of our projects address design for institutional, civic, and public architecture; one-third comprise design for corporate, commercial, and private clientele; the balance of our portfolio encompasses different forms of multi-unit residential, single family residential, and urban design and planning projects.

K&KA incorporates conscious effort toward sustainability and high performance design, implementing green construction practices on all projects. The firm’s interior design services include furnishings selection and procurement, and the coordinated execution of custom installations. Our Predesign services exceed typical feasibility study; incorporating programming, master planning, comparative evaluation, phased construction, and detailed construction cost estimating.

K&KA is frequently engaged to address buildings and sites with historical contexts, involving sensitivity to traditional precedent and an accrued knowledge of vernacular detail and architectural craft processes.

The firm has been responsible for planning and construction projects valued at over $200 million. We design solutions for programs that include spaces accommodating academic instruction, public gatherings, living, entertainment, the arts, recreation, conservation, manufacturing, maintenance, and transportation.

"Few people realize how complicated it is to build – that is until they find themselves lost in the maze of design options, building codes, zoning laws, contractors, and so on. No two building projects are exactly alike, so there is no single, clear-cut path to follow.”

– AIA Guide to Architectural Services

In understanding what is involved in design and construction projects, it is imperative to recognize that the enterprise of building is a collaborative effort. The architect, contractor, and owner ultimately share in the responsibility for a project’s success. The design professional is called upon to bring vision to a project and provide the skill necessary to assemble groups of craftsmen, tradesmen, and specialists to make that vision a reality.

Architectural Design combines: artistic sensibility, creative and logistical problem solving skills, an awareness of technological advancements, knowledge of historical precedent, and an understanding of construction industry capabilities and skill sets. Architecture of substance lifts the spirit of both the occupant and casual observer, while responding to the economic and physical constraints associated with each distinct project.

KAUTTER & KELLEY ARCHITECTS provides design services that thoughtfully integrate current construction practices with creative aesthetic and functional concepts, maintaining a sensitive awareness of cultural traditions, and recognizing client’s desires and objectives as critical to the success of the completed work. K&KA‘s energetic and indefatigable approach to project representation, research, design, documentation, and construction administration is undoubtedly one of the firm’s most noteworthy and recognizable character traits. Principal architects accept oversight and management responsibilities for all projects ensuring professional accountability.

Prospective clients will find that we make every effort to lead them through the multitude of design options in order to realize the successful execution of their desired architectural environments. The best of these projects maximize investment impact by concentrating funds where they are most effective and best appreciated.
