Looking to renovate and expand a crabber’s house built in the 1950’s near the mouth of Grays Inn Creek and the Chesapeake Bay, the owners engaged K&KA to design an addition that utilized two existing bedrooms, one bathroom, and existing rooflines. Maintaining a portion of the existing home allowed the structure (and addition) to remain where it was strategically located, with the sun rising and setting over water. The design transformed an unremarkable one-story brick house into a two-story retirement retreat through the construction of a series of linked pavilions. Deep roof overhangs trace the undulating forms which are punctuated with a fully glazed foyer and screened porch interstitial spaces. The interior features white birch casework, a delicately detailed open stair and balcony, and a two-sided brick fireplace.
