West Reading / Buttonwood Street Gateway

Following the success of the West Reading Mainstreet Foundation work along Penn Avenue, the municipality turned to K&KA to provide a conceptual design that focuses attention on the secondary Buttonwood Bridge connection with Reading to the north. North Fifth and Reading Avenues join Buttonwood Street at a large, unadorned traffic circle. The predesign suggests a landscaping transformation of the Circle that marks the gateway into downtown WR. The design promotes safe pedestrian navigation of adjacent sidewalks and encourages longer term occupation of the Circle garden. Landscape berms with ground cover plantings, low-height retaining walls that function as seating areas, ornamental grasses and lawn, a reflecting pool, flowering shrubs and trees surround a small plaza and safe haven for resting, relaxing, and gathering for community events.
