Earl Industries

Situated at the confluence of Scott’s Creek and the Elizabeth River, Phase I of a two-phase twin building design project required planning for new corporate offices for Earl Industries, a privately owned U.S. Navy ship repair, manufacturer, and protective coatings company. Outdoor public space and native landscaping connects the office complex with the neighboring Scott’s Creek Marina. The design calls for the use of pre-stressed concrete piles due to the buildings proximity to the river. The project incorporates sustainable architectural design strategies including integrated solar shading, an extensive green roof, high-performance mechanical and electrical systems, water conservation measures, bio-retention islands, and site planning that is ultra-sensitive to the neighboring wetlands ecology. The first building is planned to accommodate corporate offices, a large café, retail space for the marina, and corporate training space. (Earl was subsequently acquired and the buildings were not constructed.)
